Our modern brown trout hatchery has the capacity to produce up to 2 million brown trout fry per annum. Our water supply remains constant at 9°c throughout the year therefore allowing constant growth rates and thus avoiding high water temperature related fish diseases The spawning of brown trout begins in earnest by the middle of November each year and carries on through to mid January. The first fish spawned at the hatchery hatch by the end of December, and all fish are reared at the hatchery for a minimum of 12 weeks of age before being stocked out into rivers the containing suitable nursery habitat. Follow up electro-fishing surveys are carried out by local fishery staff in the summer to ascertain overall survival rates and to establish locations were wild brown trout recruitment is failing. The information gained from these surveys allows the company to strategically target our restocking efforts more effectively.
